The picture on the front side of this postcard was taken between 1974-1977, looking through the bottom part of the water tower towards Alamance (left) and Carlton (right). In 1913 a water tower was constructed north of Carlton and stood within the wall of campus near Haggard Avenue. It replaced a 10,500 gallon tank that was on the top of West Dormitory. The tower pictured on this postcard held 50,000 gallons of water and provided pressure for the college’s water system. In 1978, the Town of Elon completed a 200,000 gallon water tank (not on Elon’s campus) and this new water tower replaced the one previously on campus. The 65 year-old water tower was removed during the 1978 Christmas break. To learn more about Alamance, please view other postcards with Alamance in the title.
