On March 1, 1907, postcards began having a ‘divided back’ so that the message and address could be written on the entire backside, allowing beautiful artwork and pictures to cover the entire front of postcards. Many U.S. postcards were printed in Europe from 1907-1915 (known as the Divided Back Era), especially in Germany, where printing methods were regarded as the best in the world. This period quickly ended with the threat of the war and the majority of postcards were no longer imported from Europe. This ‘greetings’ postcard was sent in 1909 from Alonzo L. Hook, a 1913 Elon graduate, and later Dean and Professor of Physics at Elon College. It was sent when Hook was a freshman at Elon College to a Mr. Walter C. McDonald in October 1909 to show Mr. McDonald where he would be spending his time and to ask for a letter in response. For further information on Alonzo L. Hook, please see our finding aid online at http://www.elon.edu/e-web/library/libraryinfo/findingaids.xhtml. Transcription on front: Alonzo Hook
