The Administration Building was completed in 1889-90 and was the first building on Elon’s campus; it was three stories high, 129 feet long by 57 feet wide, and had an octagonal tower in front that was 25 feet in diameter and 104 feet high. The Administration Building housed classrooms, offices, labs, society halls, the chapel, a library, a museum, reading and music rooms, an observatory and men’s dormitory rooms. This building was also referred to as ‘Main Building’ or ‘Old Main.’ On January 18, 1923 the Administration Building caught fire on the second floor and was completely destroyed with a total loss over $125,000; the building was replaced by Alamance, which still occupies the same site today.
