James Anthony Drummond joined the Elon faculty in 1987 and is the founding department chair of Leisure and Sport Management (recently renamed Sport and Event Management). Before entering academe, he worked with the Tennessee Division of State Parks and attained the position of assistant director of state parks. He served as department chair at Elon for seven years and also served as the university parliamentarian.
Recently, Drummond has donated a gift to Elon in memory of his late wife, Joan Summers Drummond. The major gift will name the Joan Summers Drummond ’52 and James Anthony Drummond ’50 Plaza at the Schar Center, Elon’s new 5,400-seat facility that will provide a premier gathering space for major campus events and serve as the new home for the university’s basketball and volleyball programs. The Schar Center is scheduled to open in 2018.
