He entered the preparatory department at Elon in 1892. He worked on campus to earn his tuition and graduated from the college in 1899. Brannock taught in public schools in Haw River, Vance County, and Selma, North Carolina as well as, Valdosta, Georgia, before returning to Elon. He received an M.A. degree from Elon and joined the faculty in 1908. Brannock then went on to study at John Hopkins, as well as Columbia University earning a Master’s degree in Chemistry in 1925. Like all Elon faculty, he assumed duties beyond his teaching responsibilities serving as the Curator of Buildings and Grounds as well as Faculty Recorder. He taught in the Chemistry department at Elon University for fifty years, and for many of those years he was the chair of the department. He retired from the department in 1955, but continued to teach part time for several years following his retirement, and served as a consultant to Carolina Biological Supply until his death.
