Luther E. Carlton left an endowment to Elon College upon his death in December of 1956. He left $50,000 for the College, and $10,000 for the Elon Children’s Home. Both he and his wife, Mary Ellen Farmer Carlton were members of the Board of Trustees for Elon College for more than thirty years. Many members of the Carlton family had made anonymous donations over the years, some of which was used to build the brick wall which surrounds part of the modern campus. The former library building was dedicated in honor of Luther Carlton’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Carlton.
