Iris Holt McEwen, was born in Alamance County, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Kirkpatrick Holt, one of the distinguished pioneer families of the Alamance County area. McEwen was a graduate of the Greensboro Normal College, now known as the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. McEwen was a charter member of the Burlington Service League, the Mentor Book Club, and the Burlington Garden Club. Largely through her leadership the first Girl Scout council of Burlington was organized. She served two terms as president of the Girl Scout council. She was a member of the Board of Trustees for Elon College starting in 1948, and McEwen Dining Hall was constructed as a result of financial gift given to the College by the McEwen family.
