This video is part three of a three part series that documents a conversation between J. Earl Danieley and Verona Daniels-Danieley talking about their 60 years of marriage and life together in Alamance County, North Carolina. The video begins with the Danieley’s discussing how they first met which includes the story of Verona standing on her office chair while working in the President’s office at Elon College and J. Earl Danieley walking by her office. Danieley asked if she was okay and Verona responded that “she saw a mouse.” J. Earl Danieley says he was brave enough to rescue Verona. Specifically, J. Earl Danieley mentions that when they were dating, Verona lived in West Dormitory and she was the Secretary to President Leon E. Smith (1931-1957). J. Earl Danieley rented a room in the Brannock home (today where McMichael Science Center building stands). Their first date was a hayride to Dr. Charles E. Kernodle’s pond on the Kernodle’s Farm located on Highway 87 in front of Western Alamance High School. The second date was a football game at Guilford College in 1946 (at Thanksgiving) and they had dinner at the Correct Time Inn located on South Church Street in Burlington, North Carolina. In 1947, J. Earl Danieley told Verona that he wanted to get married when they were in Verona’s home in Beaufort, North Carolina. Verona discussed with Danieley how working for President Leon E. Smith did not allow her time to finish her degree and finishing her Secretarial degree was important to Verona before they got married. The wedding took place on September 1, 1948, at the United Methodist Church on Ann Street in Beaufort, North Carolina. President Leon E. Smith (an ordained minister) initially agreed to conduct the wedding ceremony but due to illness he was not able to preside over the Danieley’s wedding. Elon College Dean Daniel J. Bowden conducted the Danieley’s wedding ceremony and the wedding reception was held at the Daniel’s family home in Beaufort, North Carolina. For the honeymoon, J. Earl Danieley borrowed his brother’s (Howard Danieley) car to go to White Lake in White Lake, North Carolina. Due to substandard accommodations in White Lake, the Danieley’s decided to travel to New Bern, North Carolina and spend their honeymoon at the Queen Ann Hotel. During their honeymoon, the Danieley’s finished breakfast in New Bern and were walking down the street when Jo Watts Williams (class of 1955) called out to the Danieley’s. Upon returning from their honeymoon, the Danieley’s lived in the Veterans Court apartments (current location of the Oaks), paying $22.50 a month in rent and stayed there from September 1948 - June 1950. In June 1950, the Danieley’s moved to a new apartment in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, paying $75.00 per month for rent. J. Earl Danieley began his master’s degree in educational administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition, Verona learned to drive while they were in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Verona was employed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill athletic ticket office. In 1949, J. Earl Danieley received his M.A. (Master’s degree) in educational administration. In 1954, Danieley received his PhD in Chemistry (major: organic; minor: analytical and physical chemistry). In November of 1952, the Danieley’s moved back to live in one of the four apartments in the Atkinson house in Elon, North Carolina which was located on Trollinger Avenue. The Danieley’s had the bottom apartment on the left side, and Jo (Watts) and Bill Williams lived on the east side bottom apartment. Above the Danieley’s apartment was Professor Jason and Harriet Socks, and on the other side were the Boyd's. The Danieley’s discuss the time when J. Earl Danieley was Elon’s President as being stressful and hectic. Additionally, entertaining employees of Elon and other guests was difficult because they had very little help before and during these events. The Danieley’s discuss the secrets of a long marriage. The Danieley’s want to leave behind a legacy of being honest and leaving a good name that is valued and respected amongst family and the Elon community. Some notable names include: J. Earl Danieley, Verona Daniels-Danieley, Leon E. Smith, Dr. C.E. Kernodle, Burton Daniels, Daniel J. Bowden, Howard Danieley, Jo Watts Williams, William (Bill) Williams, Jason and Harriet Socks, and Edith Brannock.
