This video is part of a series that documents the Faculty-Staff Awards Luncheon at Elon University that occurs at the end of the academic year in May. At the luncheon, faculty and staff are recognized for their years of service. This year’s luncheon was held in Alumni Gym. Included in all the Faculty-Staff Awards Luncheon videos, the current President discusses a number of issues and topics that relate to Elon. In this 2007 video, President Leo M. Lambert mentions topics relevant to Elon that included: a number of new facilities; Elon’s School of Law opened its doors in the fall with a dedication by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor; the Koury Business Center opened in the fall; however, the construction of the Oaks Residence Halls was delayed and temporary housing was provided for all students. Lambert remarks that during Spring Convocation, Elon celebrated Engaged Learning and heard from 10 students who reflected on their Elon experiences. Lambert notes that once again Elon University received significant national recognition: the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll named Elon as one of the nation’s top three universities for community service, earning a Presidential Award in recognition of its high level of innovation and effectiveness in service programming. Additionally, Elon was one of four universities to receive the 2007 Senator Paul Simon Award for campus internationalization. The Board of Trustees approved the Ever Elon Campaign to build Elon’s endowment which Lambert believes will be one of the most significant decisions in Elon’s history. Lambert ends with mentioning the most important event of the academic year - Elon’s 117th Commencement. During the 2006-2007 academic year, according to the program, there were three awards presented: the Periclean Award for Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility (Project Pericles), the Distinguished Scholar Award, and the Daniels-Danieley Award for Excellence in Teaching. The first award, the Periclean Award for Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility (Project Pericles) was awarded to James D. Pickens. Nancy S. Midgette presented the award to James D. Pickens. The Periclean Award for Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility (Project Pericles), a national initiative of the Eugene Lang Foundation, advocates and supports the preparation of young women and men for socially responsible citizenship in a democratic society. The Periclean Award recognizes one faculty or staff member each year who has helped make social responsibility and participatory citizenship an essential part of Elon’s educational programs. The second award, the Distinguished Scholar Award was awarded to Anthony E. Weston. Gerald (Gerry) Francis presented the award to Anthony E. Weston. The Distinguished Scholar Award recognizes excellence in scholarship as acknowledged by both the Elon community and by the larger community of the candidate’s discipline. Nominations originate from individuals holding faculty rank. Final selection is made by a sub-committee of the Faculty Research and Development Committee. The third award, the Daniels-Danieley Award for Excellence in Teaching was presented to Pamela M. Kiser. President Leo M. Lambert presented the award to Pamela M. Kiser.
