The Lawrence House was a turn of the century mansion built by Dr. and Mrs. Walter P. Lawrence around 1910-1911 on the corner of Haggard Avenue and O’Kelly Avenue. Dr. Walter P. Lawrence was an 1894 Elon graduate and was for many years an English professor at Elon College. After Dr. Lawrence’s death, his daughter remained in the house for a short time until she sold the house to Dr. Robert Baxter, an Elon faculty member. The house was later referred to as the Baxter House and the Haggard Avenue House, and was purchased by the college in 1984. Demolition of the Lawrence House began in January 1997 in order to make room for the new McMichael Science Building, which presently stands in this location.
