This video is part of a series of videos that document J. Earl Danieley lecturing during the class he teaches each winter term at Elon University called Elon: Past, Present, and Future. Included in all the videos in the collection, he discusses a number of topics that relate to the history of Elon University. Specifically, in this video Danieley discusses a group of graduates who in 1895 decided to create an alumni association (an organization that contributes to and supports Elon in a number of ways). Danieley states that since 1895, the Elon Alumni Association has played a significant part in the outreach for fundraising and networking at Elon. Danieley talks about athletics at Elon and how some early sports teams wanted to compete with other college teams rather than just with intramural teams. He also discusses athletic scholarships and how important they became in the early years at Elon College. Danieley mentions the Lincoln family, specifically Asa Lincoln who graduated from Elon in 1911. Additionally, Danieley discusses how Asa’s only child (who never attended Elon) gifted 3.25 million dollars to the college after she passed away. In the McMichael Science building there is a Lincoln Pre-Society plaque named for Asa Lincoln. Danieley mentions the various locations of tennis courts on Elon’s campus throughout the years. Danieley continues his lecture by talking about the beginnings of the debate teams and literary societies at Elon College. Danieley educates the class on the early presidents and some of the accomplishments of each one during their tenure. He also mentions when electricity and running water were first available on campus. In conclusion, Danieley remarks when Elon College adopted the college seal and he explains in detail what all the symbols and words on the seal mean. Some notable names: J. Earl Danieley, J. Fred Young, Asa Lincoln, Long Holleman, C.D. Johnson, Leo M. Lambert, William W. Staley, and Emmett L. Moffitt.
