This video is part of a series of videos that document J. Earl Danieley lecturing during the class he teaches each winter term at Elon University called Elon: Past, Present, and Future. Included in all the videos in the collection, he discusses a number of topics that relate to the history of Elon University. In this video Danieley discusses the life of J.W. Wellons at Elon, athletics, Elon’s first football game in 1909, and the suspension of football at Elon for more than a decade. In 1911, The Bulletin of Elon College (now the Academic Catalog) announced a new tradition; a basketball scholarship was given to any high school student attending a school where the principal was an Elon graduate. This basketball scholarship tradition continued through the 1940’s. Danieley also discusses former President Emmett Leonidas Moffitt and his tenure at Elon while president. In March of 1941, there was an Alumni banquet held in Burlington and President Emmett Leonidas Moffitt was the keynote speaker. Immediately after the speech, President Emmett Leonidas Moffitt sat down and passed away. The Board of Trustees found the next president to-be William Allen Harper (the 4th president) since he was the Dean of Elon College and an alum. President Harper married Estelle Walker. Danieley discusses the construction changes at the college during Harper’s administration. Kemp Johnson was influential in getting a new gym built in North Dorm. A water tank was built for the campus. Ladies Hall existed until the late 1960’s. Danieley discusses how the Sloan family enjoyed to travel the world and funded the construction of Sloan Dorm.
