Young continued by saying the committee that selected this area for Elon College was due to the grove of oaks and its beauty and the location close to the railroad for transportation. Elon College had a deal with Southern Railroads to not send a train through the area (150 feet from the campus); however, the conductor who drove the train through Elon College, North Carolina, during Elon College Commencements or cultural events, tooting the train’s whistle which disrupts the events. Young introduced the speaker, Donna Oliver. Oliver received the National Teacher of the Year (from Alamance County, Cummings High School in Burlington, North Carolina) in 1987 and President Ronald Reagan presented Oliver with a crystal apple. Since that time she has travelled 100 thousand miles in support of education. In June, Oliver carried her education message to Spain.
