This video titled, Elon Vision Luncheon, was held in the Isabella Cannon Room on November 5, 1997 in the Center for the Arts. President J. Fred Young opened up the luncheon with the public announcement of the next Elon Vision campaign. Richard McBride, Elon College Chaplain said the Invocation. Barbara Bass, an Elon College Alumna, stated what the Elon Vision included: to strengthen Elon both including new facilities and academic programs – the new science building, the new library or the learning center of Elon, support for the study abroad program, the communications major, strong graduation programs (currently Elon has the Master of Business Administration {MBA}, Master of Education {MED}, Master of Physical Therapy {MPT}). The Elon Vision program sought to ensure Elon had a diverse and a talented student body which means the raising of the SAT scores to an average of 1,100, establishing a financial program, and building an on campus football stadium (prior years played at the Burlington Memorial Field in Burlington, North Carolina). Bass discussed Elon’s faculty and staff which she stated are critical to the success at Elon. Bass stated Elon must raise the high degree of faculty in their field of interest and keep salaries competitive. Bass stated, we all must advocate for Elon College. Bass continued by saying, this plan will put us in the forefront of higher education. It was clear at the Pinehurst, meeting that Elon has a large network of people as resources. Zack Walker, Elon College Alumnus outlined the fundraising campaign which included: Pinehurst meeting approved the finance fundraising goal of 40 million dollars – as of November 5, 1997, the campaign had already raised 22 million dollars pledged. Walker continued with saying that over the next 4 years Elon will raise 18 million dollars and perhaps more. The Financing of the Elon Vision objectives included: 14 million dollars for the new library (in 2016 the Belk Library), 8 million dollars for a football stadium (in 2016 the Rhodes Stadium), 10 million dollars for professorships and scholarships, 5 million dollars for the annual fund, 2 million dollars for premiere programs, and 1 million dollars for the renovation of Whitley Auditorium. Walker stated that 40 million dollars is not a small goal, but he felt confident that Elon was going to meet this goal. The enthusiasm and excitement of the Pinehurst meeting would be carried out throughout this campaign by trustees, friends of the Elon College, parents, faculty, and students. For Elon to achieve the Elon Vision goal all these groups would have to be involved in the fundraising. Young said this Elon Vision Campaign is going to be successful because we are becoming a premiere institution on the eastern sea board. Young stated that out of the 17 objectives that Bass outlined in her announcements, 7 of the areas were completed, with 7 other Elon initiatives seeing progress, and three remaining unfunded (including the library and the stadium). Then questions and answers followed from the audience. The first question involved the time frame for the library: (audio is hard to hear). Young stated the goal is to open the library in the fall of 2000. Whitley Auditorium will be upgraded with a new organ and polished as it should be the jewel in the middle of campus, stated Young. The funds will be raised from a combination of trustees, friends of the college, interested parties, and hopefully there will be an excess of 40 million dollars. Bass stated that there will be several different committees that will be working together. Elon wants to characterize, find, and identify people who can make certain gifts to Elon College. Bass stated there is a vision set and the committee would love to have your participation. Donors may choose how and where they donate. The general funds will go to the library and the football stadium. The library needs 5 million dollars to finish up this goal. The library (in 2000, Belk Library) will be the academic center of the campus. There are Elon Vision building drawings of the library, the stadium, and the football field. After the discussion, in the room there were Jaleh M. Hagigh, Nan Perkins, J. Fred Young, and b-roll of Barbara Bass talking, Gerald Whittington and Dusty Rhodes talking, and Alan White walking in the b-roll shot.
