This video titled, The Ninety-Ninth Commencement Exercises was held Under the Oaks at Elon College on Saturday, May 20, 1989 at ten-thirty o’clock. This is tape 2 of 2 tapes. This Commencement program continued with the Conferring of Degrees. The Conferring of Degrees was presented by Warren L. Board and Conferred by J. Fred Young. Graduates walk across the stage. Board announced the 99th Class of 1989 (applause and cheers). Recognition of Chairman Thaddeus (Thad) Armie Eure was presented by Royall H. Spence, Jr., Chairman-elect, and Board of Trustees. Eure has not missed an Elon College Commencement, said Spence. In 1942, student enrollment was 642 (the year Spence, Jr., graduated Elon College) to the current enrollment of 3,000 students in 1989. Spence continued to applaud Eure’s devotion and service to Elon College. Eure received a plaque for service to Elon College and named Eure Chairman Emeritus’s of Elon College Board of Trustees. The Announcement of Honors and Awards were presented by Gerald (Gerry) L. Francis, Dean of Academic Affairs. The Appreciation Message was presented by Lisa A. Rodrigues, President, Class of 1989. The charge to the Graduating Class was presented by J. Fred Young. The Alma Mater was led by Leonard L. Rowe. The Elon Alma Mater words included: So here’s to dear old Elon, Faithful and bold, Here’s to her banners of maroon and gold; Here’s to men and women, Who’ve come and gone, Singing the victor’s song of old Elon. The Closing Prayer was given by Richard W. McBride.
