This video titled, “Senzeni Na Highlights,” was directed and choreographed by Jason Aryeh, Assistant Professor of Dance, of the Performing Arts Department in McCrary Theatre, Center for the Arts in February of 2017. Senzeni Na (also spelled Senzenina, English: What Have We Done?) is a South African anti‐apartheid folk song. The Xhosa/Zulu language song is commonly sung at funerals, demonstrations, and in churches. Aryeh stated, “Every year I come up with a dance to research around and create dances that will tell a story or address a topic in our community while celebrating humanity. Last year (2016) it was about the trans-Atlantic slavery and this year (2017) Senzeni Na celebrates and remembers apartheid in South Africa (this quote is from Aryeh’s April 6, 2017 email to Linda Lashendock). In the program, there were 17 musical and dance selections. The students in the performances may appear in the highlighted piece of the following 17 musical selections.
