Construction on North Dormitory (also known as Alumni Building) began in June 1912 when the Elon College Board of Trustees approved the expenditure of $12,000 to erect the building. It was completed on schedule and was ready for occupancy January 1, 1913. The completed cost of the structure was $26,000. North Dormitory was three stories in height over a full, partially underground basement. The building contained living quarters for students and a men’s gymnasium. The gym floor was 60 feet by 100 feet with the basketball court in the center being 45 feet by 80 feet. On January 27, 1913 the first game against a visiting team was played. The space in the basement was partly used for new chemistry and physics laboratories, where the remaining space was used for the new domestic science department and contained the kitchen. The domestic science department eventually moved to the first floor of Ladies’ Hall once it became more popular. The showers and dressing rooms for students were also housed in the basement. North Dormitory was demolished in 1959. North Dormitory is the building located on the left side of the postcard with three floors and a basement. Alamance building is pictured to the right. Also pictured is the north entrance gate parallel to Haggard Avenue. Today, Powell building stands near the former site of North Dormitory.
