This video, titled Elon Distinguished Professors, was held in McKinnon Hall, Moseley Center on May 18, 2018. The honor of Elon Distinguished University Professor is conferred occasionally by the Board of Trustees. They select from senior faculty whose career achievements inspire the university community because their excellence. Criteria for the award are intentionally broad: excellence in teaching, scholarship, service, and leadership. A faculty committee, with members from all ranks, is appointed by the president. The committee, chaired (in 2018) by Tim Peeples, after soliciting nominations from all full-time teaching faculty, forwards a written nomination, with supporting materials, to the president for his review. With the president’s approval, the nomination is forwarded for final consideration to the Board of Trustees. The Elon Distinguished University Professor is invested in a ceremony attended by colleagues, present and former students, members of the Board of Trustees, university administrators, and special guests. As a symbol of the honor, the Distinguished University Professor is presented with a stole, designed to be worn with academic regalia. On burgundy satin embroidered with gold thread, the stole features the Elon University seal and clusters of oak leaves and acorns, a symbolic rendition of Elon’s acorn-to-oak philosophy of nurture and flourishing growth. The stole was created with the assistance of Anne Simpkins, Associate Professor of Art, and Carolyn Nelson, University Director of Design.
