This video, titled Leadership in the Changing World, by Dee Dee Myers, occurred on January 19, 2010 in the McCrary Theatre, Center for the Arts. Myers was the Former White House Press Secretary for William (Bill) Jefferson Clinton. Myers served during the first two years of the Clinton administration. She was the first woman and the second-youngest person to hold that position. Myers discussed the pros and cons of the Democrats and Republicans. 00:00:47 Myers was impressed with Elon University’s engaged learning. 00:03:45 Myers talked about how she got into politics. 00:06:10 In 1991, Bill Clinton called Myers to join his presidential run against current president, George H.W. Bush. 00:07:00 Myers spoke of the television shows that she worked on after serving the Clinton administration (West Wing consultant and co-hosted the news program Equal Time on CNBC). 00:10:14 Myers talked about the role of the press secretary. She stated that the role meant to get the facts straight and protect the president’s priorities. She spoke about how early in the morning the position started, with the staff meeting at 7:30am in the White House. About 9am, any reporter in the West Wing could come in and talk with Myers as an informal and on the record conversation. Myers learned during these conversations more from the reporters for her briefings and/or what the president may be asked during the day. 00:12:26 Myers learned that her role was more to listen than to talk. 00:12:58 Myers stated, “When I thought all was under control all went unwrapped and then all hell broke loose.” 00:13:47 For example, Myers received a phone call from the situation room. The voice stated, “A plane had crashed into the White House. President Clinton, Mrs. Clinton, and Chelsea were all home and all are okay.” Myers stated that you have a plan, but you have to be prepared for the unexpected and be flexible for leaders. 00:18:07 Myers talked about Clinton’s successes and his risks he took during his presidency. 00:18:58 An honor for Myers was to get to know the Clintons personally. Myers told a story about the Clintons leaving for their first Martha's Vineyard vacation with Chelsea breaking her hand from holding her Dad’s hand. This crashed President Clinton as a father. 00:22:35 Myers spoke about leaders that she meet during her years at the White House. She stated that she admired Clinton because of his curiosity. 00:24:14 Myers admired Hillary Clinton because of her work ethic and her resilience. 00:26:29 “President Barack Obama focused on his long term goals,” said Myers. 00:33:00 Also, Myers admired the singer Bono. “Bono used his celebrity to change the world,” said Myers. 00:35:21 Myers told the students to find their passion and work hard to master the subject (to do a little more extra). 00:37:10 Myers said, “Learn that failures are okay, only if you pick yourself up.” Myers thanked the audience.
