The Psiphelian Literary Society was for the women of Elon, and their society hall was located on the first floor of the Administration building. The general purpose of a literary society was to meet weekly ‘for improvement in composition, oratory, reading and debate, and acquiring knowledge of parliamentary law.’ Social gatherings, such as an ‘ice cream supper’ made the three literary societies the center of social life at Elon College for the first three decades. If any student in their second year was not a member of one of Elon’s three literary societies, that student was required to write a 1000 word essay every two weeks on a topic given by the English professor. The Administration building burned completely in 1923, and all literary societies were disbanded before World War II. Transcription on front: Dear Ruth, I received your letter some time ago, will write you when I get time. I saw Hosea yesterday evening, just spoke to him. I told him when I got back from home that I saw you and he said he wished it had been him. Hope you are getting on nicely a school. Just think only seven weeks until I will come home again. I hope the ground will be covered about twelve inches in snow all christmas week. Who is your sweetheart down there now? Kyle I expect. This is our society hall, expect to see you standing on that very rug before many years. The hall has been fixed up since this picture was taken and is prettier than this now. Elsie
