North Dormitory was built in 1912 with hand pressed bricks and opened its doors in January 1913. It combined men’s student housing with a gymnasium that was three stories in height over a partially underground basement. The basement had showers, toilets, lockers, and also the College’s modern chemistry and physics laboratories prior to the completion of the Duke Science Building in 1925. The second floor was the men’s gymnasium, laid in ‘Michigan hard maple’ and measured 60 feet by 100 feet. A basketball court was at the center which was where the Elon basketball team played home games. The third and fourth floors gave access to dorm rooms, which accommodated 100 male students, and opened onto balconies overlooking the gym floor where spectators could watch basketball games. Due to unexpected changes in construction costs (which the college could not pay), the Elon College Alumni Association offered to pay the necessary funds; thus, the building was renamed ‘Alumni Building’ but continued to be called ‘Old North’ by students and faculty. North Dormitory stood parallel to Haggard Avenue, now the present-day site of the Caroline E. Powell building. North Dormitory was demolished in 1959 when the building was beyond repair.
