This article begins with Sigmon explaining his service-learning experience in Pakistan between 1958-1961. It was during this service trip that Sigmon's passion for service-learning began when he realized how beneficial it is. His trip to Pakistan made him ask what causes cultural differences, economic gaps, injustices, and what can be done to improve society overall. He continues to describe his journey with the Peace Corps-type program between 1964 and 1966. After these experiences, Sigmon vowed to improve our educational institutions by involving service-related activity. Sigmon lays out service-learning basic premises and examples of how to best serve the community.
