Robert Sigmon's article published in the Spring 1995 edition of the NSEE Quarterly encourages people to think about their choice of words and pay attention to external voices around us. Sigmon argues that by taking a step back from the service aspect of service-learning and examining the environment, there will be a deeper connection and meaning to the service one is doing to create mutually-fulfilling arrangements where each can be learners and teachers, servers and served. By slowing down and paying attention to ones surroundings, servers will be able to more effectively serve in their communities.
