In this article published in the NSIEE Experiential Education volume 8, Robert Sigmon defines service-learning as being rooted in a non-exploitive society that recognizes each individuals worth, and work together to improve opportunity for all people. He continues by stating two major principles of service-learning: The person being served controls the nature of the service and are actively involved in the decisions affecting them, and learners control what they are learning to the extent that they are actively reflecting upon the principles involved and encouraged to try new approaches according to Sigmon.
