In this article, Robert Sigmon begins by stating students in his society were alienated, which led to drug use, long hair, unconventional dress, and the prevalence of communes. Sigmon argues that three educational deficiencies caused the students to feel alienated: (1) failure to recognize that learning from experience is constant in life, (2) the lack of emphasis on cross-cultural experience, and (3) the lack of emphasis on developing autonomy and on fostering student initiatives. Sigmon argues that internships provide students to fix all three deficiencies and attain crucial education. This article acts as a recruiting tool for the North Carolina Internship Office by telling students the various ways they can get involved in service-learning.
