Sigmon's fable predicts what the 10 years in the future, the year 2007, holds for civilization. He imagines a newspaper article written by The New York Times that tells a story of service-learning. Sigmon does this to brainstorm what the next generation of service-learning will be. Sigmon lists the problematic situations as poverty, violence, and uneven economic opportunities that happen year after year. The article suggests that liberal arts college students should act as leaders in their surrounding community and assist others. College students are able to accomplish tremendous amounts over a period of time with hard work and dedication, according to the fable. The fable concludes by saying that the partnerships between colleges and their communities have flourished and they have created a framework for individual excellence and service-learning opportunities. Society overall would be more literate, healthy well-housed, and expressive.
