The Elon University Forest is a 56-acre undeveloped property north of University Drive that was designated as a preserve by the Elon University Board of Trustees. Some of the trees in the forest are estimated to be over 150 years old. It is used mostly for science research by Elon University academic departments and is not generally open for public use. President Lambert announced the creation of the Elon Forest at a press conference on October 25, 2010. Biologist Jeffrey Coker said that classes would be able to use the forest as a teaching resource and by biology and environmental studies students. The forest was originally a 138-acre undeveloped property purchased by the university in 1997. In 2002, University Drive was constructed and bisected the tract. Now the forest is the portion of the tract that is on the west side of Powerline Road and north of the four-lane bypass. The property includes a variety of ecosystems offering environmental benefits, aesthetic value, and research potential.
