Sloan Hall is located on the corner of East Haggard Avenue and North Williamson Avenue on Elon University’s campus in Elon, North Carolina. The building is named in honor of W. W. Sloan and Bessie Pickett Sloan, members of the Elon College faculty for 25 years. The dormitory is currently a co-ed residence hall in the Historic Neighborhood with suite-style rooms. The dormitory began as New Dormitory following the deconstruction of Ladies Hall in 1960. When it opened, it had a temporary roof covering the single floor and housed only twenty-four students. Second and third floors were added in 1961 following an anonymous donation of $100,000. Following the anonymous donation, the president said it was made by “friends…deeply interested in Christian higher education in general and in Elon College in particular”. Construction began in June 1961 and was completed and reopened during the fall semester. Once the building was dedicated to the Sloan’s a decade later, it was made known that the modest couple had been the anonymous donors.
