Carlton Hall was originally constructed in 1923 following the Fire of 1923 at Elon. It is a part of the historic central quad that faces Scott Plaza and Fonville Fountain. It was named for Trustees P.J. Carlton, H.A. Carlton, and L.E. Carlton and their sister J. Dolph Long. It was originally the library and was funded by a donation of $50,000 from Pleasant Joseph Carlton of Richmand. The cost of the library exceeded the original estimate and ended up totaling $95,000, which the Carlton family covered. After being used for 44 years as the library, the library was moved to McEwen. Carlton contains the history seminar room which was given by Robert Model. The room features American Traditional Antiques, lighted book cabinets and a chandelier. The room is used for history and political science classes and the trustee committees, alumni groups, and the Liberal Arts Forum. Currently, the building houses the Department for World Languages and Cultures.
