West Dormitory was one of the first buildings on Elon’s campus. It was the third structure built, completed in 1906. President Moffitt secured a $20,000 loan to build the dormitory and soon after a second loan of $35,000 to complete the dorm. When it opened, the music classrooms, parlors, and rooms for female faculty and staff were on the first floor. There were rooms on the second and third floors for one hundred women. The dorm also included the college infirmary between 1912 and 1957. On the north side of the building, the first floor of the annex was a gym, and the second floor contained the dining hall, kitchen, and servant’s rooms. In 1942, the annex burnt down. Students paid $110 per year to live in the dormitory and two women shared one room. Legend states that in the fire of 1923, a young student named Mary tried to escape and died from jumping from a third story window. Mary apparently haunts the West Dorm, making the chandelier swing back and forth, lights flicker, and pulling pranks on residents.
