The Moonelon Conference Center was a campground on about 30 acres of land with a lake, field, pool, picnic area and lodging facilities located in Elon, North Carolina. The Lodge was the site of a Christian Conference Center, which many boys and girls attended each summer while it was operating. During the school year, the center was used for picnics, retreats, student meetings, Ministers’ Convocations, among other things. The camp operated both on funds from camper’s fees and fundraising in local churches. The Southern Convention of Congregational Christian Churches sponsored the camp and laymen often led these fundraisers to collect funds from churches in Virginia and North Carolina. Teenagers and young adults volunteered at the camp during the summer as councilors and everyone worked to improve the campground in the early 50’s. In the camp’s 1959 and 1960 pamphlets, it states, “Come to camp Moonelon this summer! Here you will find opportunities for fun and Christian fellowship, time to study and dig deeply into our Christian faith and come to understand what it can mean in your life, significant experiences of worship, good food prepared by expert cooks, a chance to get closer to the out-of-doors and understand God’s ongoing creation”.
