The North Dormitory served as a dormitory and gym for almost fifty years, starting in 1913. The building was located where the Powell Building now stands, parallel to East Haggard Avenue in Elon University’s Historic Campus in Elon, North Carolina. It was a four-story brick building with wide cement steps to an entrance on the second floor. The North Dormitory was home to the Elon University Basketball team prior to the opening of Alumni Gymnasium in 1950. The center of the building was open, with balconies around the third and fourth levels. Each floor had a communal bathroom, except there weren’t any showers. The building had a total of forty-four dormitory rooms and the basement housed locker rooms, showers, and a new science laboratory. The North Dormitory was demolished in 1959 to make room for the Powell Building.
