The central power station was between the Old Administration ”Main” building and Haggard Avenue on Elon University’s campus in Elon, North Carolina. This system was the first central heat, electricity, and running water plant in Elon’s history. Construction for Elon’s central power plant began in summer of 1906, under President Moffitt’s command. The university borrowed $15,000 to provide running water to the campus and to construct a power plant to provide electricity and heat for three buildings. Water was pumped from the well to the storage tank on the roof of West Dormitory, and when it proved inadequate, a new well was dug in 1910. By the mid-1940’s, the plant “had gotten into a very bad state of repair so much that the army rejected the school as a training center until (Elon) would agree to make all necessary improvements on buildings”. Elon’s second power plant was completed in 1948 in what today is Young Commons near the Carol Grotness Belk Library. The power plant was dismantled fifty years later after the campus heating system was decentralized in 1998.
