Carolina Hall is a residence hall on Elon’s campus that opened in 1956. It was named after Congregational Christian Churches of North Carolina. Carolina was originally an all-boys dormitory and was built in conjunction with Virginia Hall and a new dining hall. The funds for the three buildings came from a loan from the Federal Housing and Home Finance Agency for $675,000 for the expansion of housing facilities at Elon. During 1976-1977, there were multiple fires in Carolina that incurred serious damages to certain rooms. In 1978, Carolina was remodeled and in 1979, Carolina was switched from being a men’s dorm to being a women’s dorm in order to place men’s and women’s dorms in closer proximity. Currently, Carolina houses all women in a traditional style setting with double rooms and hall-style bathrooms.
