Duke was built directly after the fire of 1923 along with four other buildings including Alamance, Carlton, Whitley, and Mooney. It is a part of the historic central quad facing Scott Plaza and Fonville Fountain. Duke is named after Artelia Roney Duke, the mother of James B. and Benjamen N. Duke who donated $50,000 for construction of the building. Duke remained the science building until McMichael science building opened in 1998. After the science wing moved to McMichael, Duke underwent renovations and the Computer Science and Math Departments took over the space. The Academic Advising Office also relocated to first floor Duke.
