Johnston Hall is located at 103 Antioch Avenue near the intersection of Antioch Avenue and Trollinger Avenue on Elon University’s campus in Elon, North Carolina. Johnston Hall is registered in the National Register of Historic Places due to its lengthy and storied history. The building was originally owned by the Christian church and used as a Christian orphanage following the Civil War. The Christian orphanage was started in 1905 to help care for and educate children who were orphaned, neglected, or abused. There was a farm where they would grow food and raise livestock for consumption and sale up until World War II. The building has been used as institutional housing, a library, and orphanage administrative offices. Johnston Hall is named after Charles D. Johnston, chairman of the Board of Trustees for the orphanage starting in 1916. He helped the orphanage get back on its feet following consecutive years of turmoil, and turned a debt of $7,000 into more than $4,000 in excess revenues. Johnston gave the children a feeling of confident self-reliance and sense of being valued. By 1940, the orphanage owned over 250 acres, many of which served as farmland. Today, Johnston Hall is the headquarters for Elon’s Office of University Advancement, which includes Elon’s development and parent program personnel. The building includes a welcoming reception space and a large multipurpose room suitable for meetings and special events.
