Constructed in 1913, the water tower stood north of the Carlton Building. It replaced a 10,500-gallon water tank constructed of wood that was on top of the West Dorm. The 1913 tank held 50,000 gallons at a time when Elon relied on wells for water supply. The tank provided not only pressure for the water system but also for fire protection, if needed. Following the completion of the towns 200,000-gallon water tank in 1987, the tank was removed during the 1978 Christmas break.
