Smith Hall is an all-male residence hall in the Historic Neighborhood of Elon University, located off of East Haggard Avenue in Elon, North Carolina. The building is named in honor of Leon Edgar Smith ’10, Elon’s fifth president. In 1947, Elon was forced to turn away male applicants because they did not have enough dorms for all of the students, so the college borrowed $1,500,000 from the Federal Housing and Home Agency to construct new facilities. In fall of 1956, a fire destroyed South Dormitory, so in turn the administration applied to the Federal Housing and Home Finance Agency for an additional loan of $250,000 to build a replacement dormitory, Smith Hall. The first residents moved into the building in January of 1958. The brick used to build Smith Hall was donated by Milton Cheshire, an Elon graduate who owned the Sanford Brick and Tile Company. In 1978, the college received $633,000 to renovate Smith and Carolina Halls from a loan approved by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The renovations included installing insulation, rewiring, plumbing, and updating all major utility systems. Smith has been notorious for vandalism and incidents throughout the years, ranging from broken property to fires.
