Alumni Memorial Gymnaisum was built from 1949-1950. The building was dedicated on December 2, 1950 and includes a memorial for Elon students who died in World War I and II. Vernon M. Kearns Jr. was the architect who created the building plans for the Gym, and James F. Darden, Elon’s alumni secretary, was the construction contractor. Elon students served as part time laborers and Professor A.L Hook’s physics students completely wired the building. From 1992-1993, the gymnasium was remodeled to include air conditioning, new flooring, additional bleacher seating, offices, classrooms and renovated locker rooms. The fitness center was expanded to include five racquetball courts, a weight room, a dance studio, a cardiovascular fitness center, and a human performance lab. Alumni Bob and Della Vickers McKinnon pledged $250,000 for the renovation, and the Kresge Foundation awarded Elon a $50,000 challenge grant for the renovations. Alumna Frances Chandler Wilkins and her husband also gave Elon 177 acres of land for her $125,000 pledge to the renovation. The Huey room is located inside Alumni Gym which was given by the Huey family in memory of Chester Huey. The Huey room is a lounge area and meeting room for athletic groups. The gym was renovated again in 2010 to make new locker rooms, faculty offices and fitness center.
