The Cable school, originally named the Travis Creek School, was built in the early 1850s as a part of North Carolina’s original public school system. It was known as a “common school.” The building taught students until the Civil War, and was then used for unknown activities through World War I. The Cable School is located behind Rhodes Stadium on a patch of land that was dedicated to Elon by the Cable family, who had been using the building to store grain. It was discovered in 1999 after Martha McDuff, a student at Elon, studied common schools for an independent research report where she found information on the Cable School, the last documented common school in Alamance County to remain in its original location. Elon renovated and restored the property with furniture from the time period. It was dedicated on May 6, 2014.
