Main Building was built in the current location of Alamance Building, and was mostly complete when the school opened in September 1890. The building housed the auditorium, library, society halls, a chapel, an observatory, faculty and administrative offices, and most of the classrooms. It had an octagonal tower in the front of the building. It began using electricity in 1906 when a central power plant was built that provided steam heating and electricity for the college. Main Building burned down in the fire of 1923. The bell from the building and the cornerstone were both preserved and are currently housed in Alamance Building.
