Elon alumna Bryant Colson, class of 1980, described how his journey to Elon happened abruptly. He had agreed and signed to go to Wake Forest, but then, through personal connections, he toured Elon, enjoyed the campus, and was offered more scholarship money. His ultimate choice, then, was Elon. From his experience, he encourages students to put their all into their experience at Elon. Colson was also Student Body President and the first Black editor of Elon's newspaper, the Pendulum. He tells the story of Mary Carroll Robertson, Elon's first Black Homecoming Queen in 1979, and how he crowned her. Mary Carroll's accomplishments were not included in the yearbook, and many Elon students protested against that by burning their yearbooks. This story was then written about in the Pendulum and other newspapers/magazines. Voices of Elon is a mini-oral history program led by the Committee on Elon History and Memory.
