Sentiment analysis is a type of text mining that is centered around uncovering the underlying emotional tones of a text. This project utilizes sentiment analysis techniques of sacred texts from nine global religions in order to understand the emotions behind their written word. Sentiment analysis for this project was conducted through R, a statistical programming software tool, using specific packages and lexicons to best understand these documents. English translations for each text were sourced from various online databases, focusing on versions with the least amount of additional interpretations added. Several graphics were created from the results of this project to cross-compare texts based on origin, geography, and similarities in sentiment. This project is aimed at expanding the capabilities of sentiment analysis into fields not often explored, such as religious and interreligious studies, as well as bring to light how analysis techniques could help advance conversations of religious academia.
