Elon alum Queen Assata Stephens, class of 2022, talks about her journey to choosing Elon through the acceptance of Black students, many food options, and smaller class sizes. Going to Phoenix Fusion, where minority groups get together, she was able to visit the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity Education (CREDE). She loved it there so much that she worked there while she was a student. While exploring Elon her freshman year, she joined the a cappella group, Sweet Signatures. However, not feeling seen or heard, she created Melanated Melodies, which is a group that helps Black students feel comfortable with their music and voices. She had multiple big roles on campus on top of being the founder and president of Melanated Melodies. She was the president of the Black Student Union as well as working in the CREDE and the Center for Arts. Her hope is that students simply remember that she was here at Elon, creating new paths of acceptance for Black students. Voices of Elon is a mini-oral history program led by the Committee on Elon History and Memory.
