Pictured in this postcard from left to right are Whitley, Alamance and Mooney buildings. The O’Kelly Monument can be found on the lower left side of the postcard; it is a white, rectangular monument that is situated directly next to the furthermost tree trunk. Whitley Building was named for the Reverend Leonard Hume Whitley (father-in-law of trustee Col. J.M. Darden) and was built in 1923. Alamance Building was built in 1923 after the fire of the Old Main Administration Building, and was named for the citizens of Alamance County who contributed funds for the new building. Mooney Building was also built in 1923, and funds were given by Mr. and Mrs. Michael Orban, Jr. in memory of Mr. Orban’s father-in-law, Reverend Isaac Mooney. The O’Kelly Monument was erected in 1929 in memory of James O’Kelly, founder of the Christian Church, which in turn, founded Elon College in 1889. Currently, all three buildings and the O’Kelly Monument are still standing in their original locations on campus.
